As a team of creatives, we speak from experience. A gesture of kindness, an “I got you,” speaks volumes and resonates loudly years later. And as we survey the gift that an artist shares with the world, it is necessary to vigilantly separate the artist from the person. While people create art, they are first a human being. And humanity must supersede their talent which, is a gift for us.

For in creating, a person transforms into the space of an artist. Transitioning into this additive state is also an entrance into a deductive mindset. Like any form of art, artist subtract themselves as they pour their passion and vision into their project. And this form of polarized existent breaks away from normal practices that are often the sustenance for many. This is evident in diminutive sleep, restful breaks, meals, and deep centered relationships, which restore the heart and soul.

By the time a project is finalized, many artists can relate to a sense of brokenness intertwined with gleam. And the restoration of the self is dependent on the level and depth of rejection they experienced as approached the end, and afforded time to debrief and acknowledge their work.

More than ever, we have a ferocious demand for art. As well, we are golden slayers ready to review, critique, demoralize, and suggest another perspective. Perhaps, well intentioned or even credible behaviour, it is also posing a risk to the artist’s well being and freedom. At risk is the opening a gateway to the slippery slope of master and slave relationship between the observer and the artist. Our expectation for them to produce new work, constant engagement, and perfection begins a subliminal message of ownership. And our money and attention are weapons of control, domination, and punishments.

Reflect for a moment on how power to limit or deny existence simply by a lack of engagement on Instagram Live, diminishing streaming, or mentions. As well, appropriating or even repurposing an image or campaign with our own caption and interpretation within seconds of there release. Arguably these actions heightened the level of fame and fortune for many an artist. But dually so, we have stripped away the identity and acknowledgement of the originators of the work, particularly, those behind the scene.©

So, lets take a few more minutes, just a few, to recognize the humanity behind every work. First, keep in touch. Even if they do not reply, usually because creativity rarely has a pause button, we are certain they are happy for the link. Second, when you can, take them out for lunch, purchase a gift, order a meal and send it over. Yes, pay for it, even if they can more than afford it. No strings attached. An artist gift is for humanity. Rarely do they experience it as much as you do. Respect. ©
