Respect to the Legends

As we come to the end of Black History and Reggae month, it is important for us to pay respect to those who paved the way for the democratization of art and culture. Talent is just the foundation. From them we learn the importance of working hard to refine the craft. While we hope the reward for our efforts will be great, let us also hope that it will inspire others to be even greater.

Aligning with this context, we extend respect to the pioneers of the dancehall sound. It is an infinite list of writers, vocalists, producers, engineers, selectors, and record labels. As part of the cultural and visual narrative, we also take a moment to shine light on the cultural influencers as the tailors, the dressmakers, the hairdressers, and the jewelers.

Culture shapes artistry. It can also challenge its viability. But some artists are also fearless visionaries.

Maintaining the musical movement is King Jammy and Bobby Digital. Observing the works of King Jammy and Bobby Digital, we were struck by their humbleness. Far from an overnight success, these producers prefer to let the longevity and quality of their work attest for their talent.

King Jammy is a legend. And arguably, he is also one of the pioneers of EDM. In the business for over 50 years, yet King Jammy continues to refine his craft with the latest in technology. He also continues to tour and participate in sound clashes. This teaches many that busting out on the scene is just the beginning. It takes one opportunity to gain attention, then countless moments to sustain success.

As well, is a prominent producer and engineer, Bobby Digital of Digital B Records imparts the lesson of tenacity and methodology. Starting his career with King Jammy, Bobby Digital is a key figure in the development of the distinctive 80s and 90s dancehall and reggae sound. His catalogue of work is outstandingly detailed. An intricate network of sounds and effects applied to produce one song. We had to purchase his work. An anthology of Bobby Digital’s work, X-Tra Wicked and Serious Times, is on constant replay in our office.

Apart from an amazing addition to our playlist, this body of work reminds of the importance of maintaining standards.
