King Jammy Presents: Dennis Brown Tracks of Life

King Jammy presents Dennis Brown, Tracks for Life. An architecture of the prominent works of King Jammy and Dennis Brown, this reggae album also features the vocals and lyrical contribution of Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Alborosie, Busy Signal, Bounty Killer and Dawn Penn, Protoje, Romain Virgo, Agent Sasco, Josey Wales, Aza Lineage, Jesse Royal, Dre Island, Baby G, Dalma, DYCR and Tristan. And amplifying the value of respecting and merging legendary and contemporary relationships, Greensleeves Record, a division of VP Music Group, esteems the release of this album, September 14, 2018.

Indeed, the house that King Jammy, Dennis Brown, and industry pioneers as VP Music Group and Greensleeves Records built is an iconic one. To some extent musical and industry pioneers are also cultural guardians. With fervour, and often more passion then finance, they establish a foundation for the present and future relations. And as we gain an awareness of their talent and hard work, we slowly begin to move into their house. Eventually we share an ancestry, even if we are geographically and racially distant relatives. But to have this legacy also suggests these pioneers built a strong musical and cultural structure through commitment to learning and encouragement of others. The beams of a foundation endure many cultural storms, especially when it welcomes new additions and perspectives. So beyond a compilation album featuring the meeting of the minds of pioneers and young legends, we have a teachable moment. This album provides a key takeaway concerning the significance of building and investing in quality productions and relationships.

Familiar with the works of King Jammy, Dennis Brown, and the selected artists, certainly each song delivers the greatness within every contributor. Dennis Brown, “Gun Town,” featuring Dre Island, is one of our favourite. An extrapolation of Dennis Brown and King Jammy’s earlier work, “Icy Road,” from the album Slow Down, this song reflects the similarity between Dennis Brown and Dre Island’s vocal styles. The tone of the delivery of both performers and the musical composition are level and flawless. While the narrative is forewarning, the rhythm is smooth and seamless. And the volume of the bass guitar, the drums, and the horns in the foreground frames the beat beautifully so we can hear the message and vibe to the beat.

Respect to King Jammy and the team. Salute to Dennis Brown. They have healed hearts, united nations, and fostered the cultural, artistic, and financial well being of many. From the men that lifted the sound boxes, the truck driver, the selector, the hairdresser, the dressmaker, the tailor, the cook, the school children, and those that just held a vibe under the house that they built.

Beyond record sales, we want a heritage site, an institution as a school that bears the name King Jammy and Dennis Brown. King Jammy is an archetype of commitment, talent, and continuous learning, the tracks of life and a solid house. ©
