Jah9 presents her latest single, “Field Trip.” Released by VP Records, June 22, this song is the gateway of reggae to the world. An unparalleled universal sound that is distinct and novel. And more importantly, it is exclusively reflective of the talent and essence of Jah9.
At this point, we can all agree Jah 9 has a remarkable vocal talent. And she has a personality that easily connects with her target audience. But what is phenomenal is her ability to transcend borders and still maintain a solid space for her primary fan base. While extending the parameters of the borders, Jah 9 has also rewritten the universal code of what is world music. And what is impressive with this song, is her ability to take us through a different perspective of the musical landscape. It is symbolical of her connection to her roots, which grants her the strength and knowledge to venture unto the world stage.
At its core, reggae music demands authenticity, a realistic expression of lived experiences. Presented in the realm of pop and other genres of music, reggae is often termed world music to fulfill the purpose of artists seeking street credibility and extend engagement strategies. Although well intentioned, a pastiche of strategically placed samplings often veers into being a clever spin on the appropriation and misappropriation of reggae music and cultural identity. And it is an effective business strategy, which motivates many to weaponize reggae music rather than present a transformative work of art.
But Jah9 is mindfully rewriting the code because, when we listened to “Field Trip,” we really felt like we were going to somewhere new and exciting. And it is an incredible feeling to have this sense of positive adventure restored. This is a brilliant song and when we arrive at the end, we cannot wait to press play again.
Jah9’s vocals are powerful, clear, and profound. Expansive as the featured instruments, each note presents a different form of the narrative. And the musical composition and engineering is structurally sound. People live for these types of work, music that reverberate and unite beyond the isms and schisms of borders. Respect to Jah9 and the team. ©
