Jacob Miller
Jacob Miller, the soulful Rastafari and reggae artist, penetrates our consciousness with the release of the vinyl LP, Who Say Jah No Dread, the Classic Augustus Pablo Session 1974-75. While the mp3 format is available on CD and on all streaming platforms, this collectible signal the importance of investing in a turntable for the vinyl edition, reissued by VP Music Group, Greensleeves label, October 26, 2018.
Listening to the album in entirety, we are awestruck by the warmth and wisdom conveyed from the vocals of Jacob Miller and the musical composition of Augustus Pablo. Evident are the tested intelligence and talent of the vocalist and the producer. With these recordings, we cannot separate the work of art from the heart of the man. As well, this album requires a complete listening session, rather than a sample of a few tracks to appreciate the level of work and consistent synergy between the two.
Reflecting on the quality of the production and maturity in their delivery we are appreciative and inspired by the exceptional work they produced within such a short span of time.
And as the style of roots rock reggae and dub music transcends to a relatable space through the sole leadership of the sword bearing warrior and fire blazing troops, we have somehow misplaced the style of the wise and discreet warriors as Jacob Miller and August Pablo. The stern, yet, cool and settled type of messengers. An approach that is even more evident in the extrapolated lyrics on the dub version.
Reggae is a positive and collective movement of iron sharpens iron. And perhaps, in this transition we have also lost the art of conveying the narrative to the disenfranchised with the love and respect of brethren. In view of that, the lightning and thunder style is best left in the hands of Jah as we focus on the power of unity. So, we salute Jacob Miller and Augustus Pablo for modelling the way through their life, friendship, and work.
Thankfully, they gifted us with this album. First released in 1975, it represents a proven strategy to achieving long term objectives and lasting results. Therefore, while this collectible would often remain in the library sealed for observation only, we recommend complete use of its musical content and added value as a cultural mechanism. Best bet purchase two copies.
