DJ Spooky, Paul Dennis Miller, presents an exceptional electronic album, Phantom of the Dancehall. As part of the phenomenal art historical experience, VP Records joins with DJ Spooky to release the single, “Enter the Arena,” featuring Walshy Fire of Major Lazer. Currently available on vinyl, the digital version will be available June 22, 2018.
Music provides a haven, particularly, from the silent confines of oppression. Within the structure of musical minutes, an artist presents a liberating force field. As DJ Spooky has done with this collaboration, it is a moment of thrilling escapism. A risk taking journey that is difficult to explain. And this is the gem of this single. You have to experience it.
Respect to DJ Spooky, Walshy Fire, and the team of VP Records. As music and culture continues to evolve, this partnership will remain a benchmark in history. At the crossroads of being deviant, creative and cultural reliance on the past produced pastiches. Once exceptional, electronic music is now mundane. Even the soul rebel reggae, unruly dancehall, and social outcast cousin hip hop have desensitized our response. But art and culture, and financial success demands defiance. And, business and creative leaders, as this team, know when to transition from evolutionary to revolutionary practices.
Knowledge is power. Equally is the power of the lived experience. And with this single, we also introduce the concept of abstract intelligence. Well versed, DJ Spooky and Walshy Fire know how to harmoniously break the rules. But, it is not easy to read these breaks. Rather, this composition slices and fuses distinct sounds in electronic, dub, reggae, and dancehall in atypical parts of the melody.
Representing the total work of art, as Richard Wagner, an eighteen century musician, termed Gesamtkunstwerk. This production reflects a creative and cultural power that is listener centered. An interest in transporting the listener to live the experience of illbient, trip hop, from a desire to skank, sway, and stomp, to crowd surfing in a mosh pit.
