Salute to every creative. Put your lighters up for the artists.
Creating an inclusive space, cell phones lit for the choreographers and the dancer across the globe as we are continue to reflect on the power of the dance. With love we share the spotlight with more legends as Kieva, Latonya Styles, Taiwan Williams, Global Bob, Carlene Davis, Orville Hall, and the late Bogle, Mr. Wacky. Our list is far from complete as there are many within this industry that continues to inspire us. Also, although we are extending love for dance, artists on a whole receives much love from our commentary as we separate the artist from the totem
The featured choreographers have received universal recognition for democratizing the art of contemporary dance. Within this argument, we also reflect on the monetization and professionalism that these leaders continue to champion for the industry.
While choreographers and dancers, as Martha Graham esteemed contemporary ballet as a recognized dance style, street dance continues to face challenges in the contemporary landscape. In particular, dancehall style dancing, although loved by many, receives less financial compensation and media attention than even its cousin, hip hop.
Dancers are cultural revolutionaries. While lyrical content can evade some level of censorship, bodily movements in dancehall deliver a direct message. Movements communicate, mediate, and even reformulate cultural foundations. And the dancehall style is a legendary militia in challenging the mindsets of global followers. This rebellious nature attracts students worldwide. Yet dancers and choreographers receive less social and financial recognition than their students and fans.
While to some extent compensation and attention is granted through the context of instruction, it deducts the purpose of the art. As well, it congeals the art and the character; as such the humanity of the dancer is deducted into nothingness.
In this argument, we are referring to the sustenance of the organ and the talent. For our team, it is important to be mindful that an artist is truly first a human being, then an artist. Also, every artist envisions a different purpose for their craft which, we cannot immediately interpret as a desire to teach.
Granted, artists in every sphere are magnetic. They have an innate power that is somewhat hypnotic. And when a dancer moves to the beat of a song, the wholeness of the experience can mesmerize us into idolatry. Before you know it, we venture to seize them as our privatized totem. Expectantly, the transference of this powerful totem is desired for our sustenance. For what is the purpose of a totem than to fulfill our needs and desires, to increase the concept of humanizing our existence?
In today's mindset, this narcissistic attitude finds a normalizing home in the cultural space of visual social media and anime centered personalities. So it is all good; perhaps, if we deviate from the truth. While reality and facts are currently at war, there is a shift in consciousness when we are mindful that an artist is first a person. To maintain sustainability, artists need to fulfill their personal and familial needs and dreams, just like us. Love, safety, shelter is vital over self actualization, the desire to give back or to lead another man to his or her glorious greatness. Repositioning our perception, expectation and consequent behaviour pattern leads us to first recognize the artist's humanity.
As far as we know, from all the experiences we have encountered, humanity necessitates financing. Yes love is the propeller but the air is the money. When we love, it is in relation to a respectful awareness of another person's needs. Subsequently, this acknowledgement guides us to compensate dancers equitably.
We extend this precept to all artists. From the jeweler to the dancer, the tailor, the designer, the chef, and the musician, and very one else in the dance, we are not entitled to your talent. For those who prefer not to teach, respect their boundaries without judgment. Support their initiatives socially and financially.
Creatives, we respect and acknowledge your humanity and all that is required for you to share your beauty with us. But we love you first. As for the interest in sharing a few teachable moments with us, thank you we are appreciative. Salute!
