Culan: From the 5th Wall to Center Stage
Culan presents his latest song, “Easy to Love You”, a dancehall rhythm with a brilliant fusion of pop, R&B, and EDM. Released by VP Records, in 2018, this song represents the new frontier of dancehall and reggae. It is creatively and technically strong in reflecting the foundation of dancehall while featuring the universal influences and ideals of the next generation of leaders.
Dancehall and reggae occupies a perplexing social and musical sphere. It is an intricate system that is emotional and tactile in the representation of lifestyle, fashion, art, sound, and deep seated memories. As part of an urban movement built on a labour of love, group work filled with challenges and eventual triumphs. It is difficult for many, industry and fans, to understand we have to permit it to grow up. To keep it in its traditional state is to partake in its death.
While we all love conventionality, eventually, we must make room for ingenuity which inevitably will challenge our perception. Culan’s take on this transitional phase of dancehall is well executed. As a result, the legends can breathe a sigh of relief. This artist has what it takes.
Culan’s work is flawless. Fusing what we perceive as three distinct sounds into one seamless song is a feat only for the bold and the gifted. Also, the tonality and texture of his vocals has the dancehall grittiness we all love. Along with his vocals applied in the proper context of a true instrument, we appreciated the arrangement permitted a cantata and the additional A cappella version to feature his vocals. As for the lyrics, a nice blend of traditional dancehall overtones and a modern style straight talk.
Confirming the level of talent that shaped this song, Culan and the production team took a creative approach without sacrificing quality. This permits Culan’s work to join the catalogue of the pioneers while leading the dancehall and reggae vibes to another level. Keeping the love for music centered in all our lives.
